Chaga is woody and rock-hard, so it is prepared as a long-simmered tonic rather than eaten like a mushroom.

Chaga tonic

Because chaga is woody and hard, simmer 2 tablespoons of crushed chaga in 4 cups of water for 45 minutes until the water turns into a dark tonic.

Fast method

  1. Crush chaga into powder or small chunks.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons to 4 cups water.
  3. Simmer over low heat for 45 minutes.
  4. Drink when the water turns dark and vanilla-hinted.

Small fixes that matter

  • Chaga is not sautéed or chewed.
  • Use hot water extraction.
  • Harvest responsibly from birch only when properly identified.

Good with

tea, tonics, vanilla, warming spices.
